Gibbs Preserve

One of ALC’s newest conservation easements comes from the National Audubon Society. This 95.72-acre parcel islocated on the Audubon Center and Sanctuary at Silver Bluff Plantation near Jackson, SC. It includes the Hollow Creek floodplain and is 70% forested and 30% agricultural and recently cut land. The land features upland hardwood forest with scattered planted loblolly pine that has been thinned once, wildlife food plots, and additional pine in deep sand. Future land management calls for conversion of currently open and loblolly habitat to a longleaf pine and wiregrass community. Pine stands will have prescribed burning on a 3-yr cycle, and hardwood stands will be kept intact as wildlife habitat. The forested and non-forested portions of the easement support a large number of bird species and other wildlife, including neotropical songbirds and game species such as deer and turkey.
