The 130-acre Blackmon Tract, in the eastern part of Aiken County on the South Edisto River, was purchased by ALC with a South Carolina Conservation Bank grant, and then was turned over to the South Carolina Heritage Trust to become part of the Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve. This site is home to rare, state-listed endangered gopher tortoises, a keystone reptile of the longleaf pine/wire grass community.
